Become a Money Detective!
Have you ever wondered where money goes during a normal week?
This fun family activity turns children into Little Money Detectives! Together, parents and children explore everyday spending choices, learn the difference between Needs and Wants, and discover how small money habits can make a big difference.
There are no right or wrong answers—just opportunities to observe, talk and learn together.
What you'll need
- A pencil or pen
- A simple tick sheet (or notebook)
- About 10 minutes each day for one week
Your Challenge
For one week, work together as a family to keep track of everyday money choices.
Each time one of these happens, place a tick beside it.

Remember—you are not writing down how much money was spent.
You're simply spotting everyday money moments.
Detective Questions
At the end of the week, sit together and chat about what you discovered.
Try asking:
- Which happened most often?
- Were there more Needs or Wants?
- What surprised you?
- Which money habit made you feel proud?
- Is there one thing you'd like to do differently next week?
Grown-ups
This activity is about conversations, not perfect money management.
Every family is different.
There is no competition and no expectation to share your results.
The aim is simply to help children become more aware of everyday money choices in a calm, positive and pressure-free way.
What children will learn
By completing this activity, children can begin to:
- recognise the difference between Needs and Wants
- notice everyday spending habits
- practise observation and simple counting
- develop confidence talking about money
- understand that every family manages money differently
